Has anyone been following the Beagle Mars thing?
I was hoping it would work... Im really keen on this whole 'back yard' science thing. Not that is was made in that madgeezers backyard, but it wasn't the usual Nasa effort.

I had hoped it would work (its call sign is pretty cool and other-worldly ;-) ) but the problem is, you can count on one hand the number of successful Mars landers over the last thirty years. :? what did the Viking probes do right that Beagle et al did wrong with a 30-year advantage of technology? :?

The landing was always going to be the biggest problem. If they could inflate the bouncy-ball balloon lander at the right time without it exploding (like it did on all the tests) then they might have stood a chance, in the end though, it seems like a big old waste of money. This was the last thing that the European Space Agency needed right now.
